The three ways foreign employers can legally hire you
Understanding the structure is what separates candidates who get to offer stage from those who stall at the final call.
| Structure | How it works | Best for |
|---|---|---|
| Employer of record | A third party employs you locally on the company's behalf | Full-time roles, benefits, stability |
| Independent contractor | You invoice directly under a services agreement | Senior specialists, flexibility, higher gross |
| Local entity | The company has a registered office in your country | Large multinationals and BPOs |
Make yourself easy to hire
Every friction point you remove increases your odds. State your timezone and overlap hours on your CV. Confirm your internet reliability and backup power arrangement. Show written communication skill — a clear, well-structured application is itself the work sample for a remote role.
- Add a line: 'Based in Nairobi (EAT, UTC+3) — 6 hours overlap with CET, 4 with US Eastern.'
- Evidence async tools: Notion, Slack, Linear, Loom, Jira.
- Show outcomes delivered without supervision.
- Have a professional email, headshot and portfolio link.
Payments and compliance
Set up before you need it: a business or professional bank account, a payment rail your client can actually use (Wise, Payoneer, Deel, direct SWIFT), and a record-keeping habit for tax. In Kenya, Nigeria, Ghana and South Africa, foreign-earned income is generally taxable locally — budget for it from the first invoice.
Where the roles concentrate
The strongest remote demand from African talent pools sits in software engineering, data, customer success, medical scribing and clinical documentation, healthcare revenue-cycle work, accounting, design and technical writing. Health tech in particular has grown quickly because clinical knowledge plus English fluency is a scarce global combination.
